20 Mudroom Lighting Ideas

No matter what kind or size of home you have, there’s a way to create and decorate a great and useful mudroom so that you can come home and peel off the day in style. Mudrooms often have built-in storage units (that resemble pro sports locker rooms) and allow everyone to have a place for everything. But they can pull double or triple duty too, serving as laundry rooms, home offices and sometimes even bathrooms.

Of course, all of these uses are just crying out for lighting! A common idea is to have recessed downlights aimed at the built-in unit so each person’s area is illuminated. But why not pep things up with more layers of light or change up the style? Let’s take a look at 20 mudroom lighting ideas.

A pendant like the Kichler Hatteras Bay can help you get this smart mudroom style! Photo credit: Transitional Entry by Portland Architects & Building Designers Alan Mascord Design Associates Inc

Peppy yellow mixes well with subdued gray in this gorgeous mudroom. I especially love the farmhouse sink and the pendant over it, which also has farmhouse style. Try the Kichler Hatteras Bay for a similar look!

Here’s another extremely sectioned-off mudroom that also serves as a home office! Once again, a pendant hangs over the window. If you do have a pendant over a window, hang it up higher than you would normally so that you don’t stare right into the bulb when you sit. (Our light sizing guide can help!) This pendant looks like the Generation Lighting Urban Renewal.

A ceiling flush mount light like the Quoizel Ozark is a great idea for mudroom lighting. Photo credit: Traditional Entry by Afton Design-Build Firms Heartwood Design

A flush mount is a great idea, especially if the room is small or the ceiling is low. Plus, in a room like this one with that big textured rustic stone wall, you don’t want the lighting to steal focus. Go for something with a smooth, sleek style, like the Quoizel Ozark.

Use industrial pendants like the Millennium Lighting Neo-Industrial to add style to a mudroom. Photo credit: Traditional Entry by West Newbury Architects & Building Designers ASB Architecture

I love the use of color here, especially in that lime green door! It’s a fun twist on a traditional look. The big industrial pendants add some bold style, too. For a similar look, there’s the Millennium Lighting Neo-Industrial.

This mudroom showcases the coastal-inspired style of the Kichler Hatteras Bay ceiling light, which uses energy-efficient LED light for a long-lasting glow.

Try an outdoor lantern light like the Savoy House Dunnmore for farmhouse style in your mudroom. Photo credit: Traditional Entry by Salt Lake City General Contractors Cameo Homes Inc.

How beautiful and airy is this entryway? Since it’s from Salt Lake City, it’s good to have something bright and white for when the weather is not so sunny (as it looks in this photo–I spy snow). In addition to the downlight above the door, there are some sconces for a charming touch of light. The Savoy House Dunnmore is a somewhat similar style.

A multi-tiered chandelier like the Maxim Lighting Notre Dame is the perfect fit for this rustic mudroom. Photo credit: Rustic Entry by Other Metro General Contractors On Site Management, Inc.

This incredible rustic entryway with high ceilings is a perfect place for a two-tiered chandelier. We have some great options for rustic lighting, including this two-tiered Maxim Lighting Notre Dame.

Choose a sleek flush mount such as the Hudson Valley Patterson for ideal mudroom lighting Photo credit: Traditional Entry by Minneapolis Architects & Building Designers Yunker Associates Architecture

The smooth and bold look of the ceiling flush mount here pairs perfectly with the other aspects of the mudroom. It looks like they used the Hudson Valley Patterson in the dark old bronze finish.

Here’s something a little different–why not try lighting your mudroom or entryway from the wall level? A pair of Hinkley Facet sconces, which are also sometimes used for bath vanity lighting, illuminate the door here with big drama!

Bring sparkle to your mudroom with a pendant like the Trade Winds Bethany. Photo credit: Traditional Entry by Edina General Contractors John Kraemer & Sons

This traditional design gets some serious sparkle with two glamorous pendant lights. We have a huge variety of pendant lights adorned with crystal. The Trade Winds Bethany has a lovely look.

This mudroom does it all with help from a drum pendant and linear island light! Photo credit: Rustic Laundry Room by Denver Architects & Building Designers PC Designs LLC

This room does a ton of stuff, considering its size: it’s a mudroom, laundry room and full bathroom (behind the pocket door). It also has two different light fixtures: a stylish structured drum pendant and a two-light linear island light over the sink. The George Kovacs Circuit has a structured flair and the Maxim Pacific has a similar linear look.

Make a statement with a chandelier in your mudroom. Photo credit: Transitional Entry by Decatur Interior Designers & Decorators Colordrunk Designs

Not only did I include this one because it’s from Atlanta, but also because of the great use of color and pattern–especially that fun chinoiserie chandelier! Note how the piping of the bench cushion echoes the green in the chandelier. Use a chandelier of any style to make a statement in your mudroom.

A pulley pendant punches up the rustic allure in this Mediterranean style mudroom. Photo credit: Mediterranean Entry by Portland Interior Designers & Decorators Jessica Helgerson Interior Design

This cute little Mediterranean-style nook (doesn’t it look like it could just as easily be in Greece?) is brightened with two farmhouse-style light fixtures: the sconce next to the nook and the pendant within it. The pendant has an interesting feature: a pulley to adjust its height! So does the Troy Citizen. As for the sconce, try the Troy Brooklyn!

A track light is a smart idea for a mudroom. Photo credit: Traditional Laundry Room by Burnsville Design-Build Firms Highmark Builders

Adjust your mudroom lighting on demand with track fixtures. Also, small puck-shaped under-cabinet lights are present in the little cubbies on the right side.

Circular lantern designs such as the Savoy House Penrose go well with any mudroom! Photo credit: Contemporary Entry by Toronto Photographers Lisa Petrole Photography

How stylish does this mudroom look? I love the mix of white, gray and black–and those two cylindrical entry lantern-style lights that provide illumination and style without overwhelming the slender space. However, be careful that they aren’t in the way of those upper cabinets when you open the doors! I suspect this might be the Savoy House Penrose 3-light.

For a different take on mudroom lighting, add a table lamp! Photo credit: Traditional Laundry Room by Greenville Design-Build Firms Dillard-Jones Builders, LLC

Well, that’s an interesting idea: a table lamp! This room serves at least two purposes, mudroom and laundry room, although I can see this area working as a crafting or home office area as well. The table lamp makes it feel so cozy and welcoming.

The Crystorama Solaris is a collection that's great for dramatic mudroom lighting. Photo credit: Laundry Room by Oakhurst Kitchen & Bath Remodelers Alfano Renovations- Kitchen & Bath Showroom

The light over the island in the middle of this laundry/mud room (which makes sense–come in dirty, remove dirty clothing, place in washing machine to get clean, right?) looks a lot like one from the Crystorama Solaris collection.

Use outdoor wall lights in your mudroom to transition from outdoor to indoor. Photo credit: Transitional Entry by London Interior Designers & Decorators Charlotte Crosland Interiors

This mudroom is just breathtaking with its glassy ceiling bringing in so much light. But since natural light isn’t always going to be available, there are also wall sconces flanking the top of the walls. These gas lantern style lights are often found in outdoor wall lighting, which is perfectly fine to use in a mudroom.

Schoolhouse lighting is an A+ choice for mudroom lighting! Photo credit: Traditional Entry by Burnsville Design-Build Firms Highmark Builders

There’s a lot going on in this mudroom: glamorous tile floor, stylish built-ins on the right, high school style lockers on the left and that schoolhouse lighting fixture above it all. It looks like a pendant that has had its downrod shortened, something like the Millennium Neo-Industrial pendant. Plus, atop the chest of drawers is a tall and slender buffet lamp.

A pendant light like the Hudson Valley Lydney adds serious style to a mudroom. Photo credit: Traditional Entry by Cumming Kitchen & Bath Designers Keystone Millworks Inc

This little room has a big lighting impact with a single large pendant fixture. Check out the halo on the ceiling, which is created by the fixture having a ring open at the top. That is so cool! The Hudson Valley Lydney has openings to provide hints of uplighting too.
