One of the most popular ways to light a kitchen island is to use pendant lights. You might be picturing such an arrangement now–a couple or trio of lights hung in a neat, prim little row at the exact same height for symmetry. That’s all well and good, but it’s not for everyone. If you want to change things up, reflect an eclectic aesthetic or just dance to the beat of a different drum, why not try something new: hang your pendants at different heights!
There are two different ways to do this. You could buy a matching set of pendants and then strategically vary their hanging heights during installation. Or, you could buy totally different pendants and place them together, varying their hanging heights.
But don’t just take my word for it. Why don’t we take a look at some examples of hanging pendants at different heights over a kitchen island?

Do you see how great this can look? Also, note the wide variety of decor styles present in the kitchens (and other rooms!) shown. That’s right–kitchens aren’t the only room where you can hang pendants at different heights to really pump up the illumination.
Just remember to not hang your pendants up too high or too low! You want to be able to take advantage of the light they give you…and to not bump your head on the shades. Need some help with light hanging height? Check out our extensive guide to light sizing.
